About Romel Pasetes
Composer, arranger and pianist, Romel de la Victoria Pasetes was born in Manila, Philippines on July 20, 1968. His parents are Rogelio Isberto Pasetes (accountant) and Melodia de la Victoria Pasetes (college professor). He has two brothers (Alexander and Rogelio II) and one sister (Eleanor). At an early age his parents hired a piano teacher for him and his siblings but like any normal kid, Romel would rather play outside and found these piano lessons boring so most of the time he hid and ran away from his piano teacher. Around 5th grade, he started to gain more interest in music. He watched a show called "Uncle Bob & Friends" every Thursday night which was just two people on a studio set, the host Uncle Bob and pianist Joselito Pascual. It's an hour long show where they just took requests from home viewers by phone. To most children, this might not be their cup of tea, after all, this show airs very late for kids but Romel made sure that he was up every Thursday night at 10:30PM on a school night just to watch and learn. When he was in 6th grade, he played his first piano improvisation of Lionel Richie's "Still".
After college, he worked full time in church. He worked for Christian Life Fellowship and because of his love for children, on Sundays he volunteered as a Sunday School teacher. Friends from church found out about his talent and asked him to play for special occasions like weddings, Pastors' Conferences, to name a couple. It's from one of these gigs that a fellow pianist spotted him and encouraged him to play in hotels. About a year after, he became lounge pianist to some of Manila's finest 5-star hotels and fine dining restaurants.
Today, he lives in Pflugerville, Texas which is adjacent to the city known as "The Live Music Capital of the World" (Austin). Unlike Austin, Pflugerville is more quiet and living about five minutes away from the beautiful Lake Pflugerville helps inspire Romel to write relaxing music.
